Tudor just presented the Monarch at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2026, reviving a name that has appeared in its catalog for roughly half a century. The new reference is not a re-edition but more of a restatement: the same essential character with a faceted case, a mixed-numerals “California” dial, dressed-down sensibility now executed with a manufacture movement and a METAS Master Chronometer certification that simply did not exist when the original Monarch was presented. At 39 mm in stainless steel, it occupies a genuinely accessible size and price bracket while carrying technical credentials that most competitors charge considerably more to match.
Things to Know About the Watch
The watch features a 39 mm case that is 11.9 mm thick, proportions that sit closer to a gentleman's dress watch than anything in the Black Bay lineup. Polished and satin surfaces alternate across the faceted lugs and bracelet links, lending the watch a geometric precision that photographs sharply and reads quietly on the wrist.
The dial is the piece's genuine surprise: a dark champagne—Tudor calls it papyrus—”California” dial with vertical-brushed surface with applied hour markers that mix Roman numerals from 10 to 2 with Arabic numerals from 4 to 8. The combination references Tudor's early Error-Proof dials and gives the Monarch a legibility that is both unusual and immediately arresting. A snailed small running seconds subdial sits at 6 o'clock. Water resistance is rated to 100 meters.
The Movement
Powering the new Monarch is the Tudor Manufacture Calibre MT5662-2U. This automatic movement is exclusive to the Monarch and visible through a full display case back. Its finishing follows traditional decoration with perlage on the mainplate, Côtes de Genève on the bridges, and an 18K gold inlay on the bidirectional rotor.
The variable inertia balance wheel runs at 28,800 vph, anchored by a traversing bridge with two-point support, and the balance spring is a non-magnetic silicon alloy. COSC certification comes first, followed by METAS Master Chronometer certification which requires the movement to perform within a 0/+5 seconds daily tolerance and function accurately through magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss. Power reserve is certified by METAS at 65 hours.
On the Wrist & Price
The Tudor Monarch comes as a surprise and pleasant release from the brand as it celebrates its 100 years of history. The watch comes with serious horological credentials, a highly appealing design for most watch collectors, historically fueled DNA, and a price that is quite compelling in this segment of the watch market. For collectors who find the Black Bay formula exhausted, this is a meaningful alternative. On the wrist, the watch feels just right.
