From the Editor: The Omega Speedmaster Broadarrow that Sold for 3.1 Million Swiss Francs at the Phillips Geneva Watch Auction XIV is a 'Frankenwatch'

Back in November 2021, an Omega Speedmaster ‘Broadarrow’ ref. 2915-1 from 1957 broke all records for a Speedmaster sold at any watch auction. This particular watch, Lot 53 at the Phillips Geneva Watch Auction XIV sold for CHF 3.1 Million Swiss Francs. A few days ago, it has been confirmed by Omega, that the watch in question is a ‘frankenwatch’ that was put together with parts that are authentic, non-authentic, correct for the time period, and incorrect for the time period, to represent the watch in a way that it would sell for such a high price. I mean the original estimate was between CHF 80,000 and CHF 120,000 Swiss Francs.

Experience: Smythson Oxblood Camouflage Burlington Cardholder & Passport Holder. One of the Sexiest Camo Patterns on Leather.

A couple of years ago camouflage patterns became a thing, and most of the high-end leather goods manufacturers decided to jump on the bandwagon, some sooner rather than later. While it took Smythson of Bond Street a little longer than most, the Oxblood Camouflage Burlington Cardholder and Passport Holder are must have if you like camo leather goods. Since we’ve talked about Smythson a few times here at WCL, we don’t need to tell you much about their history but instead, focus on the cardholder and passport holder we have here.

From the Editor: Finally Got an Omega x Swatch MoonSwatch. Here's What I Really Think About It.

t only took me five months and five days to finally be able to find a MoonSwatch at the Swatch Boutique at North Park Mall in Dallas, Texas. The Omega x Swatch Bioceramic MoonSwatch landed at the Swatch boutiques on March 26, 2022, a day before I headed to Switzerland for Watches & Wonders 2022. During my trip to Switzerland, I was able to peruse the MoonSwatch ‘Mission to Uranus’ —no pun intended—

From the Archives: Because Every Watch Has a Story. 'Dad's Missing Watch' by Matt Jackson.

Today, we start a new installment called 'Watch Stories', because every vintage watch, passed down family heirloom or preowned watch comes with a little bit of history. Unlike the rest of our content, these stories are shared and written by the actual watch collectors owning these watches. For these new section, our involvement will be limited to photographing the watches in their full glory and to editing, proofreading and style correcting the write-ups.

From the Editor: Cartier the 2nd Largest Watch Brand, Audemars Piguet the 4th, and Patek Philippe Falls to 6th Place.

Morgan Stanley just released a piece of research that includes the estimated revenue and units sold by the top 50 Swiss watch brands. While the rankings are relatively similar to what has been published by them in previous years, there are a few surprises. For the very first time, Audemars Piguet has surpassed Patek Philippe in terms of revenue and consolidated its spot as the 4th most important watch brand with a revenue of almost 1.6 billion Swiss Francs.

From the Editor: Why the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M Chronograph is a Much Better Buy than a Rolex Submariner Date

For some time, I have been thinking about getting a new diving watch and I’ve been debating between the latest 41 mm Rolex Submariner Date —I’ve owned a number of Submariners across different references— or an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M Co‑Axial Master Chronometer Chronograph. Finally, I decided to go with the Omega and now I am going to tell you why I think that the Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M Chronograph is a much better buy than a Rolex Submariner Date, especially considering the current pricing bubble.

News: Presenting the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Calibre 321 in Stainless Steel

Inspired by the Speedmaster ST 105.003 that Ed White wore in 1965 when he became the first American to walk in space, this new 39.70 mm stainless steel model features a bezel ring in polished black ceramic —ZrO2— with a tachymeter scale in white enamel. Gracing the black step dial are the familiar Moonwatch hands, small seconds sub-dial, 30-minute recorder and 12-hour recorder, and central chronograph hand. Collectors will be thrilled to see the addition of the iconic “Dot over Ninety” and other respectful nods to the past, including vintage Omega logos throughout the design.

Rare Bird: Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M James Bond. The Discontinued 45.5 mm Model.

Referred to by Omega as Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M James Bond, the Seamaster ref. 232.30.42.21.01.001 that was released in 2011 to replace the first generation of Planet Oceans 2500 —initially released in 2005— is in our opinion the best Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M ever released. Equipped with a massive 45.5 mm case in stainless steel and powered by the in-house Omega Calibre 8500 with Silicium Escapement, this is for sure one of the best daily beaters if you’re looking for a tool watch that is not necessarily your typical Rolex Submariner.

Baselworld 2018: Omega Speedmaster 'Dark Side of the Moon' Apollo 8 Limited Edition. Live Pictures & Pricing.

Without a doubt, one of our favorite watches from Omega at Baselworld 2018 and the only one we would even consider purchasing. The new Omega Speedmaster 'Dark Side of the Moon' Apollo 8 Limited Edition brings back memories of that time when Armin Strom himself used to skeletonize watches for other Swiss watch brands like Omega, a brand whom he collaborated with in several occasions. One particular timepiece that stands out from those collaborations is the 2003 skeletonized platinum Speedmaster Professional.

Insider: Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Worldtimer. Hands-on with a Watch that Falls Short in our Book.

Yet another one of those releases from Omega that didn't make much waves at Baselworld 2017 and a watch that you can hardly find any information about it. The new Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Worldtimer is fitted with a platinum case measuring 43 mm in diameter and available in a limited edition of only 57 pieces with a quite hefty price tag. This watch that intends to continue to perpetuate the unsuccessful Aqua Terra collection is not bad looking at all but one that clearly falls short in our book.
