Watch Shopping: A. Lange & Söhne Opens Chicago Boutique in Tribune Tower

A. Lange & Söhne has opened its newest American boutique at 435 Michigan Avenue in Chicago, re-establishing the Glashütte-based manufacture's retail presence in the U.S. Midwest. The location is the brand's ninth point of sale in the United States and joins recently opened flagships in London, Singapore, and Shanghai as part of an ongoing expansion of its global boutique network.

The boutique occupies 131 square meters—1,409 sq. ft.—within Tribune Tower, the neo-Gothic landmark that served as headquarters of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Chicago Tribune for nearly a century. The building, which celebrated its centennial in 2025, anchors the Chicago River side of the revitalized Magnificent Mile—and offers an architectural resonance that few luxury retail locations can claim.

The Tribune Tower's façade incorporates nearly 150 fragments of famous world architecture collected by Tribune correspondents across the 19th and 20th centuries, including a piece from the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt and a piece of the Berlin Wall added in 1990. That date carries particular weight for Lange collectors: it was in 1990, directly following the fall of the Berlin Wall, that Walter Lange re-established his family's manufacture in Glashütte after decades of expropriation under East German rule.

Spanning 1,409 square feet, the interior is designed to immerse visitors in the world of A. Lange & Söhne, rather than simply displaying its watches. Three distinct client seating areas, including two well-appointed private lounges, encourage the kind of unhurried, hands-on exploration that Lange's mechanical depth rewards.

Bespoke installations throughout the space present key elements of the Lange universe, such as the jumping numerals mechanism of the Zeitwerk, the manufacture's tourbillon architecture, and the hand-finishing techniques applied to every Lange movement—offering collectors the opportunity to examine the brand's technical substance beyond the display case. The boutique will carry a full assortment of A. Lange & Söhne timepieces.
