Angelus was founded in 1891 in Le Locle by Albert and Gustav Stolz, and the maison's relationship with acoustic complications runs nearly as deep as its founding. When the original Tinkler arrived in 1958, it was heralded as a pioneer: an automatic, water-resistant quarter-repeater wristwatch at a moment when the quarter-repeater complication was widely considered obsolete. Only roughly 100 examples reached the market. The 2026 reissue draws directly from that lineage, now within the La Fabrique collection, Angelus's home for historically informed specialty instruments, and it’s pretty much like a time capsule in terms of looks and feel.
Things to Know About the Watch
The Angelus Tinkler is equipped with a 38mm case in 18K 3N yellow gold, polished, compact, and not super thick—12.03 mm thick—with a decidedly mid-century character. The domed white sunburst dial features faceted applied markers with a unique shape and form, and a modernist Arabic 12, with one design detail that catches the eye: at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock, distinctive exclamation-shaped hour markers highlight the quarter-hour positions—a functional highlight that connects legibility directly to the repeater's purpose.
The pusher activating the quarter repeater sits at 9 o'clock, symmetrically opposite the crown. This balance is considered a design rather than an engineering necessity. A box sapphire crystal reinforces the period silhouette. The screw-down caseback bears the maison's "A" monogram. The yellow gold version pairs with an ink-blue alligator-flank leather strap and a matching gold pin buckle. Water resistance is rated to 30 meters. The Tinker 1958 is available in 18K yellow gold, limited to 15 pieces, and in stainless steel, limited to 25 pieces.
The Movement
The watch is powered by the new in-house calibre Angelus A600. This automatic self-winding movement beats at 28,800 vph and provides a 70-hour power reserve. The quarter repeater chimes on demand: a single strike on the first gong for each completed hour, followed by a double strike on two gongs per elapsed quarter. Although not visible as the movement is protected by a solid case back, the finishing of the movement includes snail decoration on the main plate, palladium-plated bridges with Côtes de Genève and polished angles, blued and chamfered screws with mirror-polished heads, and a tungsten sunburst oscillating weight.
On the Wrist & Price
On the wrist, the Tinkler 1958 is immediately striking for how little it tries to impress with its vintage aura. The 38 mm case sits flush and composed, the warm gold catching light without demanding attention. The domed white sunburst dial reads clean and legible from any angle, and the ink-blue alligator strap provides just enough contrast to give the combination character without disrupting the vintage cohesion.
This watch looks exactly right under a suit cuff. The quarter repeater adds a dimension that no photograph communicates. Quarter repeaters occupy an awkward position in the complication hierarchy—perpetually framed as the lesser chiming watch, overshadowed by the minute repeater. However, the Tinkler 1958 makes no apology for its chiming capabilities—while not the loudest—, and it shouldn't.
