The Cubitus arrived at the end of 2024 as Patek Philippe's boldest statement in a generation, with a square case with rounded edges, a sports-watch disposition, and an unmistakably contemporary personality. Honestly, we didn’t like it back then, but the new Cubitus Perpetual Calendar Skeleton is not that bad, at least not as bad as the rest of the collection, and there are some positives to this watch. For its 2026 debut at Watches and Wonders Geneva, Patek has handed it the crown jewel of the collection: a skeletonized perpetual calendar movement. The reference 5840P-001 is the first Grand Complication in the Cubitus line, and it earns that designation without reservation.
Things to Know About the Watch
The 5840P-001 is equipped with a 45 mm platinum case—10 mm thick—substantial, but consistent with the Cubitus language with contrasting polished and satin finishes and a small baguette-cut diamond on the edge of the bezel at 6 o'clock. The dial features ‘louvers’ in blue sunburst with laser-cut horizontal strips that create a controlled depth effect—like open blinds—, revealing the square-format calibre beneath while keeping the perpetual calendar display legible. A sapphire case back exposes the movement architecture in full.
The Movement
Unlike the rest of the Cubitus collection, the new Cubitus Perpetual Calendar Skeleton ref. 5840P is powered by a dedicated square-shaped automatic self-winding movement, the calibre 28-28 Q SQU which was specifically developed for the Cubitus—hoping the rest of the collection gets fitted with a square-shaped movement soon—, here in its skeletonized perpetual calendar specification. The movement measures 28.5 x 28.5mm and 5.04mm thick, with 313 parts and 27 jewels. Also, for the very first time, Patek Philippe chose to add blue enamel to the Calatrava cross on the rhodium-plated 22K gold off-center micro-rotor. This micro-rotor is also engraved with a horizontal line pattern that echoes the dial’s ‘louvers’, and the movement features no gold fill on any of its engravings or gold-colored components. The bridges have been skeletonized to replicate the ‘louvers’ from the dial side. The movement delivers a power reserve of 48 hours.
On the Wrist & Price
On the wrist, the new Cubitus ref. 5840P-001 is what collectors have been waiting for since the Cubitus launched: a complications proposition that matches the case's ambition with a movement that matches the case shape, and not an afterthought with a round movement in a square case.
The blue composite strap with fabric pattern and cream stitching wears casually against a platinum fold-over clasp that is anything but. This is the version that confirms the Cubitus is a long-term platform, not a one-cycle statement, and it seems like it’s here to stay, despite the hate. We envision that other complications will continue to be rolled out for this collection.
The 5840P-001 is the most technically significant new Cubitus to date and a compelling argument for the collection's permanence.
