Available with a clear sapphire crystal case in two versions—blue and rhodium movement—, an 18K 5N red gold, or a titanium case, the new CVSTOS Tourbillon 8 is the latest novelty added to the brand’s lineup of complications. The new watches are available in a limited edition of 20 pieces each to celebrate 20 years since its launch in 2005.
For two decades, CVSTOS has continually redefined the boundaries of fine watchmaking through its unwavering commitment to innovation and performance. Each timepiece represents another step in the brand's evolutionary journey, preserving its distinctive DNA while constantly enhancing it.
The Tourbillon 8 stands as a masterful anniversary creation, celebrating 20 years of excellence and avant-garde approach. This groundbreaking timepiece introduces an unprecedented achievement with the brand new in-house vertical flying tourbillon manual wound calibre CVS77620 which was fully conceived and developed by CVSTOS and is ingeniously crafted in the silhouette of the number 8.
The number 8 is widely regarded as one of the luckiest numbers across various cultures, with particularly strong significance in Chinese culture, where the number 8 is considered extremely auspicious because its pronunciation is similar to the word for prosperity and wealth. Additionally, the shape of the number 8 resembles the infinity symbol when laid horizontally, representing endless prosperity and eternal cycles.
Things to Know About the Watch
The new CVSTOS Tourbillon 8 Sapphire ref. E00105.3983001 is equipped with a tonneau-shaped case in clear sapphire crystal measuring 53.7 x 41 mm and features a fully skeletonized blue movement with a flying tourbillon at 6 o’clock endowed with a large 12 mm cage. The watch offers an unparalleled level of transparency unlike any other Tourbillon out there.
Made from synthetic sapphire, these cases are renowned for their exceptional hardness and scratch resistance, ranking just below the diamond on the Mohs scale. The sapphire crystal is created through a process called the Verneuil method or the Czochralski process, where aluminum oxide is passed through a flame, melted down, and then cooled to form a hard crystal that is pulled individually. This synthetic production method allows for greater control over the material’s properties, ensuring consistent quality.
What we love about the sapphire crystal cases by CVSTOS is that opposed to other brands like Hublot or Richard Mille, the level of transparency is maximized by not adding any text including water resistance—in this case, 30 meters—or limitation—in this case 20 pieces—on the transparent case back. Hence, full transparency is achieved with no obstructions.
As far as the skeletonized movement CVSTOS leaves very little to the imagination with most components including the mainspring barrel and everything else in full view. To be quite honest, very few skeletonized/open-worked watches out there provide this level of visibility. The watch is equipped with a titanium screw-down crown with a blue rubber insert.
The blue accents of the movement provide striking contrast against all the other mechanical components, creating a visual depth that's particularly captivating when glimpsed.
The Movement
Turning the watch over reveals the exquisitely finished main plate with satin-brushed finish, Côtes de Genève, micro-bead blasting, and frosting. The in-house vertical flying tourbillon manual wound calibre CVS77620 provides a power reserve of 60 hours while beating at a frequency of 18,000 vph. Without a doubt, one of the nicest movements we’ve seen in a while.
On the Wrist & Price
On the wrist, the CVSTOS Tourbillon 8 Sapphire commands very strong attention while delivering remarkable comfort thanks to its silhouette and user-friendly proportions. At 41 mm, it strikes an ideal balance between presence and wearability, sitting harmoniously on both larger and medium-sized wrists without overwhelming.
The sapphire case creates a mesmerizing visual experience, allowing light to dance through the transparent housing and illuminate the iconic figure-8 calibre from every angle. This transparency transforms the timepiece into a dynamic, living sculpture that changes character as it catches different lighting throughout the day. Despite housing a complex flying tourbillon movement, the watch maintains a simplistic approach from an overall looks standpoint, and its ergonomically designed case contours naturally to the wrist's curvature.
For collectors accustomed to traditional horology, the CVSTOS Tourbillon 8 Sapphire offers a refreshingly contemporary wrist presence that celebrates mechanical artistry while remaining eminently wearable anywhere. And the best part is that the price is not bad at all when compared to other Tourbillon Sapphire watches out there.
