The Historiques American returns to the spotlight with a new iteration available in 36.5 and 40 mm. Few watches in the Vacheron Constantin catalog carry the historical weight of the American 1921. Born from a small series produced for the American market in 1921, its cushion case, 45-degree offset dial, and unconventionally positioned crown remain as visually arresting today as they were in the Roaring Twenties. The 2026 iteration doesn’t reinvent the formula; it refines it.
Two new variations arrive in 36.5 mm and 40 mm cases in 18K 5N pink gold, each distinguished by a grained silver-tone dial with bright blue Arabic numerals and 18K gold blued hands. The finishing includes a circular satin treatment around the dial periphery that contrasts with snailing in the small seconds counter, which sits at 3 o'clock. A dark blue patinated calfskin strap with a gradient effect ties the palette together with appropriate restraint.
The Movement
Powering the watch is the calibre 4400 AS, Vacheron Constantin's in-house manual wound movement composed of 127 components with a 65-hour power reserve. It is rotated within the case to reconcile its functions with the asymmetrical dial layout, a small but telling detail. Côtes de Genève decoration across the two large bridges and the balance cock are visible through the sapphire case back. Both references carry the Hallmark of Geneva, with all that entails for finishing standards and provenance verification.
Summary & Price
The American 1921 has been reinterpreted several times since its modern relaunch in 2008, and the Historiques collection's ongoing willingness to revisit it reflects genuine confidence in the original design's endurance. The new dial colorway, silver with blue numerals gives the watch a slightly cooler, more contemporary read without compromising the period character that defines it.
