The A. Lange & Söhne's Saxonia Thin collection represents one of the manufacture's most elegant achievements in ultra-thin watchmaking. The journey began in 2011 when the inaugural pink gold model ref. 211.032 debuted at the SIHH Geneva, measuring just 5.9 mm in thickness with a 40 mm case diameter, making it the thinnest watch from the this German brand at the time.
The Saxonia showcases a remarkably refined aesthetic with its puristic argenté-colored solid-silver dial, narrow baton appliques, and slender gold hands. At its heart beats the extra-flat manual wound calibre L093.1, measuring only 2.9 mm thick, yet delivering an impressive 72-hour power reserve, with beautifully finished winding wheels featuring solarisation visible within the three-quarter plate.
History of the Saxonia Thin Collection
Over the years, the collection expanded thoughtfully: a year after its launch, a white gold version arrived in 2012, followed by dial refinements in 2016—the solid gold baton appliques, were slightly extended compared to the previous model and moved a little closer to the bezel— as well as the introduction of a smaller 37 mm case size available in white and pink gold—ref. 201.027 and 201.033, respectively.
The manufacture then explored artistic dial expressions, presenting versions with captivating solid silver dials covered with a thin layer of blue goldstone in 2018—39 mm case—and 2021—40 mm pink gold case—, and black goldstone in 2020—40 mm case—, where microscopic copper-oxide crystals create a starlit effect against midnight-blue or deep-black backgrounds. These 2020 and 2021 boutique editions were limited to just 50 pieces each. Now, in 2025, the collection is reaching new heights with two exceptional 40 mm special editions in Honeygold and in platinum, featuring jet-black glossy onyx dials and limited to 200 pieces each.
The Evolution of Honeygold at A. Lange & Söhne
A. Lange & Söhne's proprietary Honeygold alloy represents a significant materials innovation in luxury watchmaking, spanning 15 years from 2010 to 2025. Honeygold emerged from scientific research into gold alloys aimed at creating a harder, more durable material than traditional gold. The alloy is an 18K composition —75% fine gold—with copper and zinc constituents that produce its distinctive warm hue positioned between pink and white gold. Its enhanced hardness comes from mineral additives and specialized heat treatment. The brand trademarked the name, drawing inspiration from nature to describe the material's unique gloss and warm color.
Since 2010, and now with the release of the new Saxonia Thin in Honeygold, A. Lange & Söhne has produced a total of sixteen models in Honeygold. Honeygold serves as A. Lange & Söhne's exclusive case material, used only for limited editions ranging from 15 to 265 pieces. The alloy bridges the manufactory's traditional craftsmanship with modern materials science, reinforcing its position in haute horlogerie while offering collectors something distinctive from standard gold alloys.
Things to Know About the Watches
A. Lange & Söhne marks a significant moment in the Saxonia Thin narrative with two special editions that unite the collection's minimalist design language with materials of exceptional rarity. Available in 200-piece limited editions in the manufacture's proprietary Honeygold alloy ref. 211.052 and in platinum ref. 211.062, these pieces feature jet-black glossy onyx dials that create a striking contrast against their precious metal cases measuring 40 mm in diameter. Side-by-side against the platinum model, the amber-like hue of the Honeygold model doesn’t appear to be as yellow as one would expect; however, in person and under natural light, you can see that subtle difference much more.
Onyx dials represent one of the most challenging and coveted achievements in decorative watchmaking. Unlike painted or lacquered surfaces, genuine onyx is a natural chalcedony—a form of quartz characterized by its deep, uniform black coloration and glassy luster. The first challenge begins with sourcing, as watchmakers require perfectly homogeneous material without inclusions or color variations, then must cut it to wafer-thin proportions—often less than 0.5 mm thick—without fracturing the brittle stone.
Each dial blank must be meticulously polished to achieve the signature glossy finish, then precisely machined to accept appliques and movement feet—operations that risk shattering the entire piece. The material's natural fragility means production yields are low and costs are high, which is why onyx dials typically appear only in limited editions from prestigious manufactures. When executed successfully, an onyx dial offers something no artificial finish can replicate: a profound, geological depth of black with a mirror-like surface that seems to draw the eye inward, creating dramatic contrast against precious metal cases and indices.
In the case of the new A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Thin in Platinum and Honeygold, the combination creates striking watches that are like putting a tuxedo on your wrist. The long baton appliques in solid gold emphasize the elegant personality of this two-hand watch.
The A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Thin in Platinum and Honeygold features a 6.2 mm thick case that alternates mirror polish and satin-brushed finishing. The watches are delivered on a rolled-edge black alligator leather strap—a type of strap only seen on the Saxonia Thin with blue goldstone or black goldstone dials, references 205.086, 211.087, and 211.088. The thin and ultra-comfortable strap is equipped with a pin buckle matching the metal of the case.
The Movement
At the heart of both versions beats the extra-flat manual-wound calibre L093.1, a movement of remarkable engineering efficiency. Despite measuring only 2.9 millimeters in height, it delivers an impressive 72-hour power reserve, with beautifully finished winding wheels featuring solarisation. This 167-part movement beats at a frequency of 21,600 vph—3 Hz.
The three-quarter plate design, which has defined Saxon watchmaking for generations, is exquisitely crafted in solid German silver. The finishing and decorations are superb, as we have become accustomed to A. Lange & Söhne. Lastly, as it is customary, the balance cock is finely hand-engraved, and the jewels are set in gold chatons.
On the Wrist & Price
These new Saxonia Thin editions represent more than technical achievement. They embody a philosophy where elegance emerges from proportion, where the absence of superfluous elements amplifies the presence of essential ones, and where the pursuit of thinness never compromises the depth of craftsmanship within. Pure, elegant, and simple at the same time.
The A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Thin, with its 40 mm case diameter, wears beautifully on a 7.5-inch wrist or even on a smaller one, thanks to its thin case construction, which offers balanced and refined proportions. A 40 mm case is considered a versatile medium size that sits comfortably in the sweet spot for most wrist sizes. On your slightly above-average wrist, it would appear elegant and well-proportioned without looking too small or out of place.
The Saxonia Thin's notably slim profile enhances its dressy, understated character, allowing it to slide easily under a shirt cuff while maintaining excellent presence on the wrist. If one were looking for the perfect understated watch to wear in a ballroom for a gala night or a boardroom for a strategy meeting, look no further.
