From the Archives: The 'Holy Trinity of Watchmaking' in Reality Should Be 'The Holy Quartet' with Jaeger-LeCoultre Included

We all talk about the ‘Holy Trinity of Watchmaking’ composed by Vacheron Constantin, Patek Philippe, and Audemars Piguet, and for years I have debated if it should be called the ‘Holy Quartet of Watchmaking’ instead. Since it seems unfair to drop Audemars Piguet out of the trinity and include Jaeger-LeCoultre in its place, I think that making it a quartet seems more fair and reasonable.

From the Editor: The Holy Trinity of Watchmaking or What I Call the Caviar of Watches

Back in the 1990s, almost five years after I became the serious watch collector that I am today, I first heard the term ‘The Holy Trinity of Watchmaking’. This term has been used for decades in order to refer to the three most important luxury watch brands in the world. But what sets the brands conforming the holy trinity of watchmaking apart from other brands? Well, they all three hold unparalleled prestige, uninterrupted history, exclusivity, and serious accolades in the horological world.

Eye Candy: Patek Philippe Nautilus ref. 5711/1R. One of Gerald Genta's Icons.

The Patek Philippe Nautilus is a watch that needs little introduction. Launched in 1976, quickly became a legendary and iconic watch just like every other watch designed by Gerald Genta. Perhaps Genta was gifted with the 'Midas Touch' or maybe he was just the biggest visionary the horological world has had so far. Either way, the Patek Philippe Nautilus ref. 5711 is one of the sexiest watches out there, specially in its 18K rose gold version with matching integrated bracelet.

Insider: Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Minute Repeater Tourbillon ref. 6500T. The Tourbillon with a Maltese Cross on its Carriage.

Just a handful of brands can pride themselves in combining two of the greatest horological complications —the minute repeater and the tourbillon— in one timepiece and of course Vacheron Constantin is one of them. Fitted with a generous 44 mm case in 18K 5N pink gold, an 18K pink gold dial with astonishing guilloché motif and sporting an elegant dark brown alligator strap, comes the Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Minute Repeater Tourbillon ref. 6500T/000R-B324 in all its glory with a crystal clear minute repeating mechanism and a tourbillon with carriage in the shape of a Maltese cross.

Rare Bird: Vacheron Constantin Overseas Dual Time ref. 47450. Much Nicer than its Successor.

Last Friday November 17th, 2017 a new iteration of the classic Vacheron Constantin Overseas Dual Time was released at the Dubai Watch Week. After looking at the differences between the new reference we announced here and the discontinued reference 47450 we have on this feature, we really think that the discontinued model is much nicer as it comes with a stronger Vacheron Constantin aura and a way more classic and intricate design —perhaps we are biased as we own the earlier reference.

Rare Bird: Audemars Piguet 18K Yellow Gold Coin Watch. Twenty Dollars in Your Pocket with a Concealed Watch.

Only twice in our watch collecting life we have ran into one of the most fascinating and unique timepieces made by Audemars Piguet. We are talking about the ultra rare Audemars Piguet Coin Watch in 18K yellow gold. As far as we know, these rare coin watches were created by Audemars Piguet between 1915 and the late 1980s. The coin watches were produced in very limited quantities and in different currencies including U.S. dollars, Swiss Francs, French Francs and Mexican Pesos.
