SIHH 2018: Vacheron Constantin FiftySix. A Brand New Collection with Three Retro-Contemporary Looking Timepieces in two Metals.

Today, a new collection makes its way to the Vacheron Constantin lineup. The new collection named FiftySix is inspired by a historical Vacheron Constantin watch from 1956. With a retro-contemporary style the new FiftySix is a modern interpretation of the iconic reference 6073, launched in 1956. Available in stainless steel or 18K 5N pink gold, there are three new watches that are part of this new collection and which are distinguished their shape and lugs, each representing a branch of the Maltese cross which has become an emblem of the Manufacture.

In addition to its design, the lasting impact that reference 6073 was to have on Vacheron Constantin’s history also stemmed from its stature as one of the first watches from the Manufacture to be equipped with an automatic movement. Calibre 1019/1 was distinguished by its precision and reliability, at a time when most other models were driven by manual wound mechanisms.

Evoking the historical reference from 1956, these three new watches include a Maltese cross in their oscillating weights, a box-type sapphire crystal that rises above the bezel, sector type dials, superluminova on hands and markers and automatic movements. Additionally, for the very first time in its history Vacheron Constantin is offering a classic collection in stainless steel and in the usual gold. The three new watches are the FiftySix Self-winding, FiftySix Day-date with Power Reserve Indicator and the FiftySix Complete Calendar with Precision Moon Phase.

All three watches feature cases measuring 40 mm in diameter, display case backs and are delivered on alligator straps —either black or brown depending on the metal— with half Maltese cross shaped pin buckles in their respective metals.

The Movement

Naturally, both in tribute to the automatic movement of the 6073 and for the wearer’s convenience, all the versions of the new Vacheron Constantin FIFTYSIX collection, including those with complications are powered by an automatic movement, with a new calibre for the three-hand variation. For this new collection a new oscillating weight has been designed by Vacheron Constantin. This polished and satin-brushed 22 carat openworked rotor, bearing a Maltese Cross applique and a frosted-snailed finish, represents a signature feature of all FIFTYSIX models. While the new calibre 1326 powers the Self-Winding model and the Day-Date with Power Reserve Indicator model, the Vacheron Constantin calibre 2460 QCL/1 powers the Complete Calendar. Calibre 1326 provides a power reserve of 48 hours while calibre 2460 only 40 hours.
