Rare Bird: Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Alinghi Team Forged Carbon. The Watch that Marked Many 'Firsts' for AP and the Watch Industry.

One of our favorites discontinued limited edition watches and truly a rare bird is the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Alinghi Team in Forged Carbon. The Alinghi Team is a Swiss sailing team that was created by Ernesto Bertarelli and is revered for bringing the America’s Cup trophy to Europe for the first time in 132 years. The Team Alinghi’s victory at the America's Cup in 2003 inspired Audemars Piguet to design and present in 2005 the Royal Oak Offshore Alinghi Polaris ref. 26040ST —limited edition of 2,000 pieces— with an innovative special new movement featuring a regatta flyback chronograph function.

Back in 1998, I purchased my first Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, it was a stainless steel ref. 5402ST A-series that I should've never sold. After buying that first AP, the two-tone Royal Oak ref. 5402SA you see in the picture above was the one that followed. For 20 years as an AP collector and 28 years as a watch collector, I've longed to visit the Audemars Piguet manufacture in Le Brassus, Switzerland.

Mexico City is one of the watch capitals of the world. Regardless of the crime wave that has hit the country over the last 20 years, hardcore watch collectors trade pieces and buy/sell watches on a regular basis. More than eight years ago on one of my visits to Mexico City, I decided to call one of my favorite preowned watch dealers in the city and pay him a visit. I still remember like it was yesterday, when I purchased from him my very first Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo A-Series back in 1998.

Insider: Explaining the Different Types of Audemars Piguet Tapisserie Dials

The dial on the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is one of the most iconic dials in the watch world and there is more than meets the eye to its making and different textures. Audemars Piguet released the Royal Oak in 1972 with a dial featuring a ‘Clous de Paris’ guilloché motif that is referred to by AP as ‘petite tapisserie’. Then in 1993, the Royal Oak Offshore was released with a similar type of tapisserie but there are small nuances between the two and the rest of Royal Oaks and Royal Oak Offshores out there.
