News: Phillips Watches to Auction Steve McQueen's Own Rolex Submariner ref. 5513

After several record breaking sales in the last three years and the sale of Paul Newman's very own Rolex 'Paul Newman' Daytona ref. 6239 for $17.7 Million USD —including buyer's premium—, the team at Phillips Watches will be selling on October 25th, 2018, Steve McQueen’s own Rolex Submariner ref. 5513. This watch is the most important Steve McQueen-owned watch to appear in the market and the only one known to bear a special engraving on its case back. Presented as a gift to his top stuntman Loren Janes, this Submariner ref. 5513 reads on the back: “TO LOREN, THE BEST DAMN STUNTMAN IN THE WORLD. STEVE”.

News: IWC Presents Two New Portugieser Watches. A Perpetual Calendar and an Automatic Model.

Today June 1, 2018, IWC has released two new watches to expand its Portugieser collection. A new Portugieser Perpetual Calendar in platinum and a new Portugieser Automatic Time/Date in stainless steel. Both watches are fitted with silver-plated dials, rhodium-plated hands and equipped with Santoni black alligator straps. The reference numbers are IW503406 for the perpetual calendar and IW500712 for the automatic. Both watches are already available for sale as of today via the IWC website or their ADs.

News: Introducing the new HYT H0 Querétaro. A 5-Piece Limited Edition Celebrating a Mexican Aqueduct.

While the name 'Querétaro' might not mean much to people outside of Mexico, it sure does to us here at WCL and to the UNESCO. 'Querétaro' is a colonial city located approximately 200 kilometers north of Mexico City that was established in the 17th century and which has been designated as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. Split in two sections with a rectilinear section and another one with picturesque winding streets, the most prominent colonial monument in the city of 'Querétaro' is its aqueduct.

News: Audemars Piguet Releases Book on 20th Century Complicated Wristwatches. A Must Have.

Audemars Piguet announces its first ever book dedicated entirely to the history of the manufacture's complicated wristwatches, following 4 years of Archival research and writing on the part of the Heritage Department. From the world’s first minute repeating wristwatch crafted in 1892 until the revival of complications in the late 1970s, Audemars Piguet produced a grand total of only 550 complicated wristwatches, of which no two are identical: 35 minute repeaters, 188 calendar wristwatches, 307 chronograph wristwatches and 20 double complication wristwatches featuring both calendar and chronograph.

Richard Mille just released three new versions of the lightest sports watch in their collection —the RM 67-02. These new editions have been created along with the brand's professional athlete partners. News: Presenting the New MB&F Horological Machine No. 7 Aquapod Titanium Green. Hands-on Live Pictures & Pricing.

Joining the MB&F Horological Machine No. 7 Aquapod in titanium and the Aquapod in 18K 5N red gold released last year at the SIHH, comes a new iteration of the craziest and coolest MB&F released to date. The new HM7 Aquapod is also in titanium but this time with a gorgeous bright green bezel. News: Vacheron Constantin Launches a Reverse Panda Dial for the Overseas Chronograph and a Black Dial for the Overseas Date

Originally launched in 1996 and revamped in 2004 and in 2016, the Vacheron Constantin Overseas is the perfect sporty yet elegant option offered by this manufacture. While in 2016 the Overseas received its biggest facelift ever, today, Vacheron Constantin has decided to add two new dials to the collection. News: Zenith Unveils the Two New Pilot Type 20 Extra Special Watches at the 20th Cuban Habanos Festival. The Cobiha Maduro 5 Editions.

Zenith’s partnership with high-end cigar brand manufacturer Cohiba gets off to a smoking start in 2018, at the 20th prestigious Cuban Habanos Festival, with the launch of two new limited edition versions of the Pilot Type 20. This weekend at Watches & Wonders Miami 2018, we had the opportunity to peruse and photograph one of the most important celebrity-related timepieces to come up for auction. We are talking about the Omega watch gifted by RCA Records to icon Elvis Presley in 1961. This historically important watch, will be sold at the upcoming Phillips Geneva Watch Auction: SEVEN taking place in Geneva, Switzerland on May 12th and 13th of this year. The watch once belonging to Elvis Presley is a highlight of this upcoming auction and it's the watch which was owned and worn by the rock and roll icon...

News: H. Moser & Cie. Presents the Frankenstein Swiss Icon Watch. When Mockery is Used as a Marketing Tool to Gain Traction.

Up until now, we've had a lot of respect for all the creations coming from H. Moser & Cie. including their Swiss Mad Watch Unique Piece with a case made out of hardened Swiss cheese and presented last year on the occasion of the SIHH 2017 as we featured it here. However, yesterday H. Moser & Cie. announced a watch that plainly makes mockery of many of the well established Swiss watch brands and this time, we unfortunately can't praise them for that.

Without a doubt, 2017 was a year full of incredible new watches and exceptional releases from the majority of the brands at the SIHH and Baselworld; however, just like with everything else, we can only pick a handful of watches that took our breath away for one reason or another. From million dollar watches to incredible celestial complications, perpetual calendars, striking time watches and everything in between, here are our 10 favorite watches released this year to wrap up the year 2017.
