Experience: Rimowa Aluminum Watch Case. Great Looking but Quite Heavy and Cumbersome.

When the Rimowa limited edition watch case was released, we were all over it and we really liked it. Finally, we now get to bring you or impressions on one of the coolest looking three-watch cases out there that is now sold out. Rimowa was launched in Germany in 1898 with the production of wooden trunks at a manufacture in Cologne. In 1937, the very first aluminum trunk was created by the founder's son, Richard Morszeck —the abbreviation of his name gives Rimowa their name. In 1950 Inspired by the golden age of aviation, they added their iconic and distinctive grooves to their aluminum suitcases and in 2000 they released their line of polycarbonate luggage which was groundbreaking at the time.

While the Rimowa aluminum watch case is exquisitely finished and very minimalist in terms of design, it is also very cumbersome. Measuring 10.51” Long (27 cm) x 3.35” Deep (8.5 cm) x 4.41” Tall (11.2 cm), the case fits three watches —even 47 mm Panerais or AP Royal Oak Offshores— without a problem and more importantly without the risk of touching one another.

The grooved aluminum exterior shell is captivating and the interior features dark blue microfiber with subtle nods to signature features of the namesake luggage. Fashioned to easily fit within suitcases or travel bags, the biggest downside to the Rimowa watch case is its weight at almost 3 pounds —1.4 kilograms. The cylindrical design of the watch case seamlessly slides to open at either end.

After opening the case, you will first find a top cushioned layer that ensures additional protection of the watches during transport and which sits on top of the three removable padded cushions —that sit in place snugly. The cushions are sturdy and quite wide allowing for watches of almost any size to fit properly.

The Rimowa Aluminum Watch Case is designed in Germany but manufactured in Italy. While this watch case is not necessarily cheap, transporting watches of the caliber of those that we have here, makes the price of the case an absolute bargain. Considering how cumbersome and heavy the case is we wouldn’t consider it a good travel accessory but a nice display case for home use.
