Baselworld 2017: Patek Philippe ref. 5960/1A-010 Ebony Black Opaline Dial. Live Pictures, Hands-on & Price.

This Baselworld 2017, Patek Philippe took the center stage with 24 novelties that included a little bit of everything including eight new watches within their grand complications collection, seven within the complications and eight new timepieces for ladies just to name a few. The reference 5960 that we're talking about was originally released in 2006 and lauched in stainless steel with the letter 'A' in the model designation 5960/1A —which stands for 'acier', steel in French—, in 2014 replacing the gold and platinum versions. This year, a new iteration of reference 5960/1A has been released with an ebony black opaline dial.

The history of Jaquet Droz and his automatons is very rich and part of the true heritage of this brand. For Baselworld 2017, Jaquet Droz has released the a new automaton that joins the Bird Repeater, the Charming Bird and the Lady 8 Flower previous released. This new automaton timepiece named 'Loving Butterlfy' is a watch that features a 90-second on-demand animation. Available with a 43 mm case in 18K rose or white gold, the new Jaquet Droz Loving Butterfly is exclusively available in a limited edition of 28 pieces for each metal.

Blancpain and its Métiers d’Art Workshop present a new one-of-a-kind unique piece watch crafted in 18K rose gold and in the brand’s cherished shakudō alloy, depicting a “battle of the queen cows” staged in front of the iconic Matterhorn. This breed of cows from the Val d’Hérens have been part of the Swiss national heritage since 1861. Featuring a generous 42 mm 18K rose gold case and equipped with a dark brown alligator strap, this new creation by the Métiers d’Art Workshop at Blancpain is one of our favorite Shakudo pieces released by the brand.

Following their unique heritage, Breguet launches the Marine Running Equation ref. 5887 in platinum and also in rose gold. This Grande Complication marks the start of a new era for the contemporary Marine collection and incorporates a tourbillon, a perpetual calendar and an equation of time in one timepiece. The equation of time is one of the rarest and most fascinating horological complications and it serves to display the difference between mean solar time, corresponding to civil or standard hours and minutes, and true solar time, meaning the actual solar hours and minutes.

The new Patek Philippe's ref. 5320G is a new perpetual calendar that has been inspired by many predecessor models that attracted global attention in the 1940s and 1950s. In 1925, Patek Philippe launched model 97'975, the world's first wristwatch with a perpetual calendar. It was followed by further unique pieces. Eventually, the manufacture integrated this type of watch in its regular collection with the ref. 1518 perpetual calendar chronograph released in 1941. A year later, Patek Philippe introduced the ref. 1526 Perpetual Calendar without a chronograph.

Presented at Baselworld 2017, Tudor's famous Heritage Black Bay divers watch is now available in a new all-steel version with a brushed steel bezel insert. Fitted with the manufacture calibre MT5612, the new Heritage Black Bay Steel ref. 79730 also introduces a date function to the Black Bay family. The case size remains the same at 41 mm and the bracelet continues to be of the riveted type.

Baselworld 2017: Blancpain Tribute to Fifty Fathoms MIL-SPEC. Live Pictures & Pricing.

The history of the Fifty Fathoms brings together two lineages. First is that of Jean-Jacques Fiechter a passionate diver who was Blancpain’s CEO for three decades, 1950-1980. The second is that of Captain Robert “Bob” Maloubier and Lieutenant Claude Riffaud, founders of the French Navy’s combat swimmers corps and who were searching for a reliable watch for their underwater missions. With continuous improvements in mind, Jean-Jacques Fiechter incorporated a circular water-tightness indicator to the Fifty Fathoms, where if any liquid were to leak into the watch case, a disk at 6 o’clock would signal the problem by changing its color from white to red.

Up until now only available in 18K rose gold, the legendary Patek Philippe World Time ref. 5131 is now also available in platinum. This new platinum iteration reference 5131/1P-001 is a quite heavy timepiece with a total weight of 241.8 grams —as a reference a full gold on bracelet Audemars Piguet ref. 15202OR has a total weight of 215 grams— with a 39.5 mm case and a stunning dial with 'Cloisonné' enamel center with a view of the earth as seen from the North Pole.

A true stunner that was missing in the Tudor Heritage Black Bay is the new just released at Baselworld 2017 Heritage Black Bay S&G —Steel and Gold. Continuing with their space and sci-fi creations, MB&F is presenting the new clock in partnership with legendary clock maker L'Epée. The new MB&F Destination Moon with the architecture of L’Epée’s eight-day movement follows the basic engineering of a real spaceship. Power in a rocket comes from its base and the power for Destination Moon comes from the oversized winding crown in its base.

This new reference 5168G fitted with a 42.2 mm case —2.2 mm bigger than reference 5167 and still powered by the same automatic calibre 324 S C powering the Aquanaut ref. 5167 we reviewed here.

What everyone was waiting for, a single red Sea-Dweller makes its appearance at Baselworld 2017. The Sea-Dweller ref. 126600 is revisited for its 50th anniversary in a bolder 43 mm case. Rolex is introducing the latest generation of its Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller, a legend among professional divers’ watches created 50 years ago in 1967. The new Sea-Dweller features a larger, 43 mm case and the new calibre 3235, at the forefront of watchmaking technology and employed for the first time in a Rolex Professional category watch.

This evening at a casual dinner with our friends from Tudor, the first of their novelties was presented. The new Tudor Black Bay Chronograph is the newest addition to the Heritage Black Bay collection. With a stainless steel case measuring 41 mm in diameter and a matte black dial, the new Tudor Black Bay Chronograph is an automatic 45-minute chronograph.
