From the Editor: Why I Think the Patek Philippe ref. 5270P-014 Lacquered Green Dial is an Absolute Grail

As we are five days away from Watches & Wonders 2023, I’d like to talk about one of the ultimate showstoppers at last year’s edition of Watches & Wonders. As I wonder what will Patek Philippe present this year, I can’t stop thinking about the Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Chronograph ref. 5270 in platinum with green lacquered dial. Without a doubt, the reference 5270P-014 is an absolute grail in my book and here’s why.

The Dial & Case Size

The lacquered green —forest green— dial with black-gradient rim on the Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Chronograph ref. 5270P-014 is out of this world and a true chameleon. Furthermore, it is extremely legible and its layout is perfectly balanced. Then, Its platinum case measuring 41 mm in diameter makes it a very wearable watch for almost everyone without looking outdated or too small.

The Strap

Delivered on a gorgeous semi matte black alligator strap with green contrast stitching and with the traditional fold-over clasp with Calatrava cross, makes this watch very unique looking. By adding a contrast stitching matching the dial, Patek was able to add somewhat of a sporty look to it.

The Movement

Powering platinum Patek Philippe ref. 5270P-014 is the manual wound Patek Philippe chronograph calibre with perpetual calendar CH 29-535 PS Q. This exceptional calibre is composed of 456 parts and 33 jewels, to provide a power reserve of 65 hours when fully wound while beating at a frequency of 28,800 vph. The Patek Philippe ref. 5270G-018 comes with an interchangeable solid case back and a sapphire-crystal case back. This movement is a feat of horology in itself and a treat for the eyes.

On the Wrist & Price

On the wrist, this new platinum 5270 with lacquered green dial is simply out of this world. The watch wears true to its size and simply perfect. Will we see another iteration of the 5270 this year? Is Patek releasing novelties within the Nautilus or Aquanaut families? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see in just five days as I report straight from Geneva at Watches & Wonders 2023.
