W&W 2024: Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse on Bracelet ref. 5738/1R (Live Pics)

The Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse stands as a timeless icon in watchmaking history. Launched in 1968 as reference 3548, the first Golden Ellipse was presented with a mesh bracelet very similar to the one that was released a few weeks ago at Watches & Wonders 2024. In 1978, reference 3548 was replaced by reference 3738 which was the longest-running Golden Ellipse reference for 30 years, and replaced in 2008 by the current reference 5738 —available in platinum, white gold, and rose gold.

The distinctive Golden Ellipse immediately captivated watch enthusiasts with its harmonious proportions and elegant design. Renowned for its unique case shape, characterized by the golden ratio's perfect mathematical harmony —also known as the golden number is a ratio between two numbers that equals approximately 1.618.

Over the years, Patek Philippe has continued to refine the Golden Ellipse, offering various iterations in different materials and dial colors. This iconic collection pays homage to the brand's tradition of blending avant-garde aesthetics with horological excellence, cementing its status as a symbol of understated luxury and sophistication and the new Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse on Bracelet ref. 5738/1R is no exception.

Things to Know About the Watch

The new Golden Ellipse reference 5738/1R pays homage to the first Golden Ellipse from 1968 and is equipped with a bracelet for the very first time since the reference and the watch were updated in 2008. The large-sized Golden Ellipse Reference 5738 welcomes its first metal bracelet. The case in 18K rose gold measures 34.5 mm x 39.5 mm with a thickness of 5.9 mm. Equipped with a sunburst ebony black dial with applied baton-type hour-markers and slim cheveu-type hands in rose gold, the crown is set with a black onyx cabochon to complement the dial and the overall look.

The watch is powered by the legendary ultra-thin 161-part automatic movement, the Patek Philippe calibre 240 with an off-centered 22K micro-rotor, the movement provides a power reserve of 48 hours while beating at a frequency of 21,600 vph.

The bracelet is a work of art on its own. Crafted in 18K rose gold, the mesh bracelet is a fully polished chain-style bracelet comprising 363 elements, of which more than 300 links are individually mounted by hand. This new bracelet allows for sizing with removable links. The bracelet is equipped with a Patek Philippe Calatrava cross engraved fold-over clasp in rose gold with three adjustment positions —like the bracelet, the clasp is also very complex in construction.

Composed of links set in fine rows reminiscent of chain bracelets, this supple, elegant chain-style bracelet in 18K rose gold with an engraved clasp pays a fine tribute to the 1970s, during which the Golden Ellipse watch played a starring role.
