News: Roger Dubuis Excalibur Knights of the Round Table III. The Legend Reinvented in a 'LowPoly' Design.

In 2013, the legend of King Arthur provided inspiration for the release of the Roger Dubuis Excalibur Knights of the Round Table ref. RDDBEX0511. This exceptional watch cased in 18K pink gold featured 12 hand sculpted and engraved miniature knights also in 18K pink gold with their swords meeting at the center of a black jade engraved dial that intends to depict the Tudor English Oak Round Table made for Henry VIII. Then in 2017, Roger Dubuis released the Excalibur Knights of the Round Table II ref. RDDBEX0495 this time cased in 18K white gold and featuring the 12 knights in bronze. Both watches feature a 45 mm case and are available in a limited edition of 28 pieces each.

Drawing inspiration from its predecessors, Roger Dubuis has decided to release a third version of this watch in a more modern execution. The new Roger Dubuis Excalibur Knights of the Round Table III ref. RDDBEX0684 features a bigger case measuring now 47 mm in diameter and in 18K pink gold and is also available in a 28-piece limited edition.

For this new model of the Knights of the Round Table, every single knight is unique and represents one of the 12 legendary figures reinterpreted through a 'LowPoly' design —a polygon mesh in 3D computer graphics. The knights are gathered at the center of a tablemade of solid blue enamel blocks. The 'LowPoly' sculpted knights are reproduced in three dimensions and are only 6.5 mm high. Casted in pink gold, they are sculpted, engraved and finished by hand in great detail.

The 3D solid enamel blocs create the new sanctuary paying tribute to the Island of Avalon. In the story of Excalibur, the island of Avalon is the is first introduced as the place from which the legendary sword was forged and later where King Arthur was taken to recover from his wounds from the Battle of Camlann. It was said to bear vast amounts of fruits and gave those who were allowed to inhabit it longevity beyond 100 years. And, to those who believe King Arthur never died, this is the place from which he will return. Each dial requires 45 hours of work.

The watch is still powered by the in-house Roger Dubuis automatic RD821 which provides a power reserve of 48 hours. This movement composed of 172 parts and 33 jewels, beats at a frequency of 28,800 vph. The movement is protected by a solid case back with a small opening that allows for partial view of the movement. The watch is delivered on a blue alligator strap with 18K pink gold folding buckle. The watch is exclusively available at Roger Dubuis boutiques and to be honest we prefer the first two editions way over this new one.
