Insider: Glashütte Original Senator Cosmopolite Stainless Steel. A Lot of German Watch for the Money.

Previously available with Roman numerals on its dial and a day/night indicator with blue and gold details, the Glashütte Original Senator Cosmopolite is now also available in stainless steel with Arabic numerals on its dial. Powered by the automatic calibre 89-02, this watch gives you 37 time zones taking into consideration quarter hour, half hour and three quarter hour time zones variances. Fitted with a generous 44 mm case in stainless steel and a power reserve of 72 hours, the Senator Cosmopolite was fully conceived and developed in-house. Fitted with a silvered-grain dial this watch allows world travelers to keep two different time zones in check indicated by the airport IATA codes for each of the 37 cities via the apertures located at 8 o'clock.


Things to Know About the Watch

Equipped with three crowns conveniently located on both sides of the case band, setting the home time and the destination time on this watch is not a complicated operation. All it takes is to turn the crown at 4 o'clock clockwise or counter clockwise to set the destination time via the IATA codes on the apertures at 8 o'clock. After setting the destination, the date is also set to the correct date at the selected city taking into consideration adjustments as you fly back from the West Hemisphere.

The apertures at 8 o'clock not only indicate the selected time zone, but they also keep track of the DST —Daylight Savings Time— or STD —Standard Time— is active at the destination time zone. While the destination time is marked by the hour and minute hand on the central pinion, the home time is displayed in the subdial at 12 o'clock also featuring a power reserve indicator and a day/night indicator that will show a black dot for night and no dot for daytime. With running seconds at 6 and a big panorama date at 4 o'clock, the layout of the dial is rounded out by the contrasting day/night indicator at 9 o'clock.


The Movement

The automatic movement calibre 89-02 is an in-house movement composed of more than 400 components, 63 jewels, swan-neck regulator and off-centered micro rotor. Beating at a frequency of 28,800 vph —4 Hz—, the movement provides a power reserve of 3 days.

Also available in 18K white gold or 18K red gold, the Senator Cosmopolite is equipped with an elegant alligator strap with deployant buckle. While we also like the precious metal versions of this watch with its Roman numerals on the dial, we feel that the Arabic numerals on the stainless steel model make the watch much more contemporary.
