We met @RJKama at an Omega watch collector’s hospitality trip, and after instantly clicking with him, we became close friends. We still remember back then when we would pressure him non-stop about opening an Instagram account, and he wouldn’t do it. Finally, after several attempts on our end, he surprised the social media world with his passion for watches and incredible photography. @RJKama is a doctor that likes to be called SUPERDOC, and that sees health as a sensation of well being instead of an absence of disease. After launching his IG account many years ago, he rapidly became a most follow account for those looking for incredible photography of Omega timepieces with a very particular look and feel. Without a doubt, this is one of the most interesting interviews we’ve published on Watch Collectors here at WCL.
Now, you’ll hear straight from him all that he wants to share about this fantastic hobby that brought us together in the first place.
Our very own special Instagram contributor located in Singapore and a well-rounded watch collector, @orangedial17 is very well known for his stellar photography as one of Asia’s finest collectors. Not only @orangedial17 is a good friend of ours but someone that we also admire from a watch collecting standpoint. A longtime contributor to The Rolex Forums, The Purists and Timezone, he is a watch collector that is easily recognized because he is either wearing his very unique Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chrono in 18K white gold with salmon dial or his 36 mm Royal Oak in Tantalum.
When you think of that one watch collector on Instagram that is always striving to get his hands on the most pristine examples of some of the most iconic watches in the world, the first name that comes to mind is @Jfdorozco. From his mint Patek Philippe Nautilus ref. 3700 to his ultra crisp Audemars Piguet Royal Oak ref. 5402ST and everything in between, the condition of his vintage watches is simply out of this world and a real treat for the eyes. A real watch collector and not a watch dealer disguised as watch collector like many out there, @Jfdorozco holds very high standards when it comes to the watches he buys and the same rule applies to how he chooses to engage with his followers on Instagram.
Watch collectors come in all sizes and types. From all sorts of personalities, styles and taste. While it is interesting to see what Hollywood celebrities and professional athletes like own when it comes to watches, there is nothing more rewarding than to see the watch collection of that normal guy or gal that we can relate to as mere mortals. As we’ve done it since day one, here at WCL we don’t recourse to using musicians, movie stars or major athletes when it comes to showing you impressive watch collections, instead, we just like to keep it plain and simple and showcase those collections that belong to those discreet and somewhat mysterious watch collectors with a fine taste for timepieces.
In another record-breaking sale this past weekend at the Hôtel La Réserve in Geneva, Switzerland, Phillips Watches, the leader in watch auctions achieved $21,250,815 USD after selling 99% of their 226 lots offered at auction. Just as usual, new records were set for Patek Philippe, Rolex, Audemars Piguet and independent brands like F.P. Journe. Even though most of the lots were very important from a horological standpoint, there are sixteen watches that broke records and that are considered highly important due to their rarity and history in the world of horology.
If you follow watch content accounts on Instagram that are known for some of the best photography, then the handle @Bharmon417 might not be new to you. A young watch collector that happens to also be a professional photographer, @Bharmon417 is not only passionate about Panerai, Audemars Piguet and Rolex, but all those other things we like to refer here at WCL as the good life. With eye-catching photo compositions that are the perfect embodiment of the hashtag #WatchLife we created five years ago, @Bharmon417 is a watch collector truly enjoying the journey and not so worried about the destination…
What started as a simple ‘Follow Back’ on the ‘Gram’ has now turned into a friendship with a fine Irish gentleman that calls London his home. With an eye for photography, a passion for the good life and a real addiction to Goyard and Mount Street Shoe Company loafers comes @APKStyle. After finally meeting in person this friendly Londoner at the Hotel Les Trois Rois during Baselworld 2018, all we can say is that his content on Instagram is not ‘smoke and mirrors’ but the real deal.
A good ol’ Texas family man with a longhorn tattooed on his heart for his ‘alma mater’ —The University of Texas—, @Bzabodyn214 is one of those watch collectors that you click with instantly. He is an avid watch collector with a very good eye for photography and the owner of a watch collection that at times seems to be like a ‘revolving door’ with some permanent pieces in it. And just as if it was yesterday, we still remember the time we met @Bzabodyn214 in person during a trip to Las Vegas and talked watches and the good life while sipping a round of perfect Negronis at the Baccarat Bar & Lounge inside the Bellagio Hotel and Casino.
As many of you know, Instagram is the favorite social media platform for hard core watch collectors. One thing all these accounts have in common is that all the content is created by their owners portraying their journey through watch collecting. As we've said it before, watch collecting is a journey not a destination. Despite that there are hundreds of watch related accounts we follow on the gram, there are probably a couple dozen watch collectors we really admire and we would like to feature them here on WCL. Therefore, today, we will be talking about @NYCWatchGuy, a young watch collector with 17,000+ followers —and counting— and someone who clearly embraces our motto that watch collecting is all about the journey.
Today, we start a new installment called 'Watch Stories', because every vintage watch, passed down family heirloom or preowned watch comes with a little bit of history. Unlike the rest of our content, these stories are shared and written by the actual watch collectors owning these watches. For these new section, our involvement will be limited to photographing the watches in their full glory and to editing, proofreading and style correcting the write-ups.
When you are crazy about watches and you like to have it all, you are walking down a slippery slope. This impressive collection that includes grail watches from Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Richard Mille, F.P. Journe, Hublot, Rolex, IWC and Panerai, also happens to include watches from other brands like Urwerk, Gerald Genta, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Franck Muller, Breitling and even Bell & Ross and Seiko amongst others. A very close friend who has welcomed us in his life like we've known each other since childhood and a man with a soft spot for Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe, he has put together a very impressive watch collection with no less than 60+ incredible watches in a very short amount of time.
As many of you know, over the past six months, the visibility of accounts with a very large number of followers like ours, has been compromised by Instagram's desire to drive up their advertising revenue. As our following on Instagram has plateaued at the 125,800 follower mark and the number of likes per post have significantly dropped no matter how hard we try, we find it harder and harder to feel motivated to spend as much time posting as we used to and liking posts of those that we follow.
Continuing with this new series where we showcase some of the most impressive and versatile watch collections in the world, this is the time to share with you a watch collection mainly composed of Audemars Piguet timepieces. Since often, it is quite common to find that watch collectors happen to also be collectors of many other objects of desire; call it writing instruments, lighters, banknotes, coins, stamps, fragrances, bags, shoes or automobiles, just to name a few, it is no surprise that this AP watch collection...
A few days ago, someone asked us how come we don't talk more about the hobby of watch collecting when our name is Watch Collecting Lifestyle. Since we see watch collecting as a journey and not a destination, we've limited how much we talk about the subject so that we don't end up being too redundant. However, in lieu of delivering more of what our readers want, we will start talking more about watch collecting and when possible share some interesting watch collections with you.
Always a joy to stop by Phillips in New York City and spend time with Mr. Aurel Bacs and his team. After a Monday morning very well spent with our friends at Phillips Watches a week ago, here are five picks from the upcoming Geneva Watch Auction: FIVE to be conducted by Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo at the Hotel La Réserve in Geneva, Switzerland on May 13th and 14th, 2017. As you guys know, Phillips Watches is now the benchmark when it comes to watch auctions after several record-breaking auctions in Geneva and Hong Kong.
The Penhaligon's Portraits collection is one of the most unique sets of fragrances from this brand and one in which the characters of each fragrance are all related and part of a fictitious very British affair that involves love, betrayal and nobility. Penhaligon's describes Lord George as a wealthy and noble man, an aristocrat that immediately reminded us of Bruce Wayne with his alter ego Batman, perfectly epitomized by the Rolex GMT Master II ref. 116710 BLNR a.k.a Batman —full review here.
Sitting a notch above the Havana Club 'Selección de Maestros' is the Havana Club Gran Reserva Añejo 15 Años from Cuba. Produced by repeatedly blending and aging selected rums and 'aguardientes' in old oak casks that add that delicate touch of tannin, this unique ageing process liberates the aromas and flavor and gives that extra smoothness that is the top mark of top quality rum. Aged for no less than 15 years and with a limited production of only 58 barrels per year, the Havana Club Gran Reserva is one of the best rums we've ever had with a unique aroma, intense flavor and unparalleled smoothness.
If you read elsewhere that all 50 pieces of the highly coveted Panerai Luminor Base 8 Days Oro Rosso PAM 717 for the Istanbul Boutique were sold out during the Panerai launch event at Les Ottoman's in Turkey at the end of 2016, please don't believe a dime of what that website said. We still can't believe that they were selected by Panerai as the only media partner to cover that event. Well, let's get back on the topic. Yesterday, we had the honor of documenting the unboxing of number 1 out of 50 of a PAM 717 purchased by a friend and Panerai collector in Dallas, Texas.
Frédéric Malle is a name that not everyone knows about and is the name behind some of the most exclusive fragrances in the world. Introduced in 2000 as Editions de Parfums, this brand is just as understated as a Patek Philippe Aquanaut Jumbo ref. 5065A on someone's wrist. A completely novel concept whereby the world’s greatest noses composed exclusive, creative fragrances to be sold under their names, Malle draws attention to the raw materials utilized in the product itself and not to his name like most fragrance makers out there.
Today, I am humbled and honored to bring you this special feature. If you are an avid reader of WCL, you know that only a handful of times I've written stuff this personal. Well, just as promised throughout our Instragram and other social media accounts, here's the special feature on the Armin Strom Gravity Date Watch Collecting Lifestyle Edition Unique Piece that arrived this Tuesday after almost five months of wait.
